Indonesian Soccer Riots Reap Sorrow – Persebaya VS Arema
ASUPAN – This riot started after the supporters from Arema FC took to the field because they didn’t accept their team's defeat in the match against Persebaya Surabaya with a score of 2-3.
They looked disapproved and took to the field by jumping over the fence. The security forces seemed overwhelmed by the chaos. At its peak, the security forces fired tear gas at the Arema supporters.
A total of 120 people died in the
riots. The riot took place at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang Regency, East
Java, Saturday (1/10/2022) night.
The incident claimed the lives of
120 people and two of them were members of the police. 34 people died in the
stadium and the others died in hospital. Temporary suspicion, the victims were
trampled on by other supporters, as well as shortness of breath due to tear gas
spray from the security forces.
In a release issued by PSSI on Sunday (2/10), the victims who died from the Kanjuruhan tragedy came from supporters and police officers.
As a result of this tragic
incident, PSSI apologized and conveyed deep condolences to the families of the
victims and those associated with the unfortunate incident.
For the time being, the 2022/2023
Liga 1 competition will be suspended for one week. In addition, the Arema FC
team is prohibited from hosting for the rest of the competition this season
